Legal Metrology

The Legal Metrology Act, 2009 was introduced in order to safeguard consumer interests and rights. Effective from April 01, 2011, it establishes and enforces standards for packaged products. Legal Metrology Registration law is applicable to all packaged products which are manufactured/imported and sold in ‘packed form’ in the Indian market.

Legal Metrology registration can be applied in two capacities:

Importer
Manufacturer

Products that come under the “weight & measurement” category, like a thermometer, BP Monitor, weighing machine, weighing scale, etc need to take three different registrations from the Legal Metrology department, i.e.

Model Approval
Import/Manufacture License
Packaged Commodity Registration

Products other than the “Weight & Measurement” category need to take only ‘Packaged Commodity’ Registration from the department.
